Creating a Comprehensive Musicianship Plan

Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail, OR....Why lesson plans are important.

Creating an effective lesson plan is the key to effective teaching and a critical factor in achieving positive student outcomes.

Are you looking for ways to revitalize your teaching? Organize your concepts and direct learning in a structured fashion? Need something out of the ordinary to spur creative thinking? Then a comprehensive musicianship approach may be for you!

The concept and term "Comprehensive Musicianship" has been bantered around since 1965 and refers to the interdisciplinary study of music. This design tool template will help you create a lesson plan or resource guide for current music curriculum which you select and help direct you toward greater depth in content and creative instruction.

The template will guide you through the process focusing on quality music selection, the National Music Standards, assessment, and integrated instruction. This template is designed to be used in a class setting, either online, professional development or workshop opportunities.

The final result in this process is a teaching plan ready to use in your classroom.

The building blocks of this model consist of four Unit Goals.

Goal 1. The selection and analysis of the music by the teacher is an integral part of the planning of a curricular unit leading to greater depth of student learning.
Goal 2. The instructional focus of the unit relates to the National Music Standards creating a balanced curriculum.
Goal 3. The integration of other curricular areas into the instrumental music curriculum is a priority.
Goal 4. Student assessment is objective and easily tracked.

We will work through the model with several objectives in mind for each goal.

Directions: Using the design tool template, work through each lesson to help build your comprehensive musicianship plan.
